Biography

"When your child is on a ride , never ever wave to him as he passes. Doing so will break into a golden moment, a blissful excursion on a prancing horse, into the land where dreams come true."

– "Carnival Rule Of Behavior"
Scribner's Magazine, 1903

BACK STORY

My first playground was in fact the Midway. The original one. Centerpiece to the Columbian Exposition of 1893. Step-dad was a Leo Burnett art director and certifiable "Mad Man" who confided that the Jolly Green Giant lived in an airplane hanger at Chicago's O'Hare Field. That tabs were kept on the Keebler Elves from his office window overlooking Grant Park. My fate was sealed.

"Silky, persuasive, sarcastic , confidential, ingratiating, hugely adaptable, often insulting, and, at the core, impossible to ruffle by anything attributal to God, man or nature ."

Carnival Talkers"
New Yorker Magazine, 1958

WHAT I KNOW

As a young copywriter invited on an Oscar Mayer plant tour to see how hot dogs were made. That was…uninspiring. Also got to see the original Wienermobile parked beside the house where L'il Oscar had lived. That was awesome. The experience was everything I needed to know about marketing. That there can be rodent hairs in facts. And magic in truth.
